Calgary’s oldest neighbourhood, where historic character, a vibrant local business district, and connections to the Bow and Elbow Rivers create one of the city’s most distinctive communities.
Inglewood is Calgary’s oldest community, located just southeast of downtown near the historic confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers. Established in the late 1800s, the neighbourhood played an important role in Calgary’s early industrial and commercial growth. Today, that history remains visible through its heritage buildings, mature streetscapes, historic landmarks, and strong sense of place.
Along with its rich history, Inglewood is known for its exceptional connection to Calgary’s natural environment. The Bow and Elbow Rivers, nearby parks, pathways, and the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary provide residents with opportunities to walk, cycle, explore, and enjoy nature close to home. At the same time, the community’s inner-city location provides convenient access to downtown and surrounding neighbourhoods.
At the heart of Inglewood is 9 Avenue S.E., a vibrant and walkable main street lined with independent shops, restaurants, galleries, cultural spaces, and local services. In addition, the Inglewood Business Improvement Area works with businesses and community partners to support the commercial district through advocacy, events, beautification, placemaking, and local initiatives.
Throughout the neighbourhood, historic homes sit alongside newer infill and multi-unit residential developments. As Inglewood continues to grow, this mix of old and new reflects a community that values its heritage while welcoming thoughtful change.
Above all, strong resident involvement, local businesses, arts and cultural organizations, and community groups continue to shape Inglewood’s identity. Together, its history, walkability, local businesses, natural spaces, and community spirit make Inglewood one of Calgary’s most recognizable and dynamic neighbourhoods.
