Manchester

A small inner-city community with deep working-class roots, historic residential character, and convenient connections to transit, employment, and destinations across Calgary.

Manchester is one of Calgary’s older residential communities, established in 1914 between Macleod Trail and the Canadian Pacific railway corridor. Originally developed within walking distance of nearby industrial employment, much of the neighbourhood’s early housing was built by 1940. As a result, Manchester’s history is closely connected to the growth of Calgary’s industrial and working communities.

Today, Manchester remains a compact residential neighbourhood surrounded by the larger Manchester Industrial area. While the community has changed considerably over the decades, pieces of its early character remain. In particular, the historic workers’ cottages along 1 Street S.W. reflect the neighbourhood’s Edwardian-era roots and are recognized on Calgary’s Inventory of Evaluated Historic Resources.
Manchester also benefits from a highly connected inner-city location. With Macleod Trail along its western edge and both Chinook and 39 Avenue CTrain stations nearby, residents have convenient access to downtown, surrounding employment areas, shopping, services, and destinations throughout Calgary.

At the same time, Manchester continues to evolve alongside the surrounding industrial and commercial districts. Its combination of residential streets, heritage, transit connections, nearby businesses, and employment areas gives the neighbourhood a character unlike many other Calgary communities.

Today, Manchester represents an important part of Ward 9’s history, a small but distinctive neighbourhood shaped by generations of residents, Calgary’s industrial development, and its close connection to the city around it.
