One of Calgary’s oldest communities, where railway history, established neighbourhood streets, recreation, and connections to the Bow River Valley come together.
Millican-Ogden is one of Calgary’s oldest communities, with roots stretching back to the early 1900s. The area takes its name from the Millican family, early homesteaders in the area, and I.G. Ogden, a former Vice-President of the Canadian Pacific Railway. As the community grew, the railway became an important part of both its development and identity.
In particular, the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway’s Ogden Shops in 1912–1913 transformed the area into an important employment and industrial centre. For generations, the shops played a significant role in the lives of local families and helped shape the working-class character that remains an important part of the community’s story today.
Along with its railway heritage, Millican-Ogden is known for its established residential streets, historic buildings, and access to outdoor recreation. The Bow River Valley provides nearby pathways and natural areas, while neighbourhood parks, recreation facilities, and gathering spaces offer additional opportunities to stay active and connected.
Community life is also supported by the Millican Ogden Community Association, which provides recreational programs, events, gathering spaces, and resources for residents. Throughout the year, community celebrations and activities create opportunities for neighbours of all ages to meet and participate in local life.
Today, Millican-Ogden continues to evolve while maintaining a strong connection to its past. Together, its railway heritage, established neighbourhood character, natural spaces, recreation, and community involvement make it a distinctive and welcoming part of southeast Calgary.
