Forest Lawn has a unique history that predates its place within Calgary. Settlement in the area began in the early 1900s, and by 1935, the villages of Alberta Park and Forest Lawn had joined to form the Village of Forest Lawn. As the community continued to grow, it was incorporated as a town in 1953 before being annexed by The City of Calgary in 1961. Today, that history can still be seen in the neighbourhood’s established streets and diverse mix of housing.

Located approximately six kilometres east of downtown, Forest Lawn also benefits from convenient connections to the rest of Calgary. Major transportation routes provide easy access to downtown, employment areas, and surrounding communities, while nearby parks, pathways, recreation, shopping, and services support everyday life close to home.

At the heart of the community is 17 Avenue S.E., better known as International Avenue. This vibrant commercial corridor reflects Forest Lawn’s cultural diversity through locally owned restaurants, international markets, shops, services, and businesses. As a result, the avenue has become both a neighbourhood destination and an important gathering place for people from across Calgary.

Today, Forest Lawn remains one of Calgary’s most diverse and dynamic communities. While its history has shaped the neighbourhood’s identity, its multicultural character, local businesses, community organizations, and strong neighbourhood connections continue to shape its future.
