Forest Lawn is a historic and culturally vibrant community located in southeast Calgary. The neighbourhood’s roots date back to 1910 when homesteaders first settled in the area. Following a period of rapid real estate speculation between 1910 and 1912 and subsequent economic challenges during the First World War, the area evolved through several stages of municipal development. In 1935, the villages of Alberta Park and Forest Lawn amalgamated to form the Village of Forest Lawn. The community was incorporated as a town in 1953 before being annexed by The City of Calgary in 1961.

Located approximately six kilometres east of downtown Calgary, Forest Lawn benefits from a highly accessible location near the Bow River, the Western Irrigation District Canal, regional parks, and major transportation routes. The neighbourhood’s long history has contributed to a distinctive built environment characterized by a diverse range of housing styles and architectural character. Residents enjoy convenient access to employment centres, recreational amenities, schools, and commercial services throughout the city.

Forest Lawn is home to several educational institutions, including public and Catholic schools, as well as Forest Lawn High School and Jack James High School. The community is also widely recognized for its prominent commercial corridor along 17 Avenue S.E., known as International Avenue. This vibrant district reflects the area’s rich cultural diversity through an extensive collection of locally owned businesses, international markets, restaurants, shops, and services that contribute to the neighbourhood’s unique identity.
Today, Forest Lawn continues to be one of Calgary’s most diverse and dynamic communities. Its blend of historical significance, multicultural character, established amenities, and strong community spirit makes it a welcoming neighbourhood for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
